On March 14, San Francisco lost a legend when Erno "Tattoo" Szabady died of a heart attack. Please join us at the Peacock Lounge on August 31, Erno's birthday, to celebrate his life and help raise funds to purchase a niche for Erno's remains at one of his favorite places in the city, the Neptune Society Columbarium.

A native Philadelphian, Erno moved to San Francisco in the 70s and began tattooing professionally at Lyle Tuttle's famous 7th St. shop. In 1987 he opened his own shop on Fillmore St. in the Lower Haight and, in the early 90s, a sister shop in Santa Cruz.

Unfortunately, in the late 90s, Erno's heroin addiction took over his life, resulting in the eventual loss of his shops and most of his belongings. In 2001, while hospitalized for an emergency amputation of his right arm, he slipped into a coma and was at death's door. Miraculously, Erno recovered his health, stayed heroin-free and even learned to tattoo with his left hand and a special prosthetic. He thoroughly enjoyed his new lease on life and is greatly missed by his family and friends.

With Erno's death, San Francisco has lost a great artist, teacher, and storyteller, but his legend lives on in the multitude of tattoos he has done, the many tattoo artists he brought into the business, and all the people whose lives he touched.

To make a donation to Erno's memorial fund, please contact Adrienne Szabady. Your contributions are greatly appreciated!
